BAKED BOWTIES
with Sausage, Fennel & Apple

INGREDIENTS
- 1 12 ounce package farfalle
- 1 pound bulk spicy Italian sausage
- 2 cups sliced fennel quartered
- 1 large red apple chopped
- 6 tablespoons butter divided
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups 2% milk warmed
- 1 8 ounce package fancy shredded casserole blend cheese
- 1 cup crispy Panko style plain bread crumbs
DIRECTIONS
Prepare pasta according to package directions; drain.
Meanwhile, in large skillet over medium-high heat, cook sausage, crumbling into large pieces. Add fennel and apples about halfway through. Sauté until sausage is no longer pink and fennel and apples are golden brown; drain off grease. Set aside.
In medium saucepan, melt ¼ cup butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour; cook 1 minute, whisking constantly. Gradually add in warmed milk, whisking constantly until smooth. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until thickened and mixture comes to a boil.
Blend in cheese; salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and continue stirring until cheese is melted.
Toss pasta with sausage mixture and cheese sauce and transfer to a greased 2½-quart baking dish. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter; toss with bread crumbs. Sprinkle over pasta. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
