
BASIC BUTTERCREAM FROSTING



INGREDIENTS
- 1 1/2 cups all vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 5 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup heavy cream or 2% milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS
In large mixing bowl, combine shortening and butter. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat until creamed.
Reduce mixer to low; slowly add powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla and salt until well combined.
Beat on high speed until fluffy; add additional cream if needed.
Variations:
Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:
1. Add ¼ cup Essential Everyday Baking Cocoa with sugar.
2. Reduce vanilla to ½ teaspoon.
Cream Cheese Frosting:
1. Replace shortening with 1 (8 ounce) package Essential Essential Everyday Cream Cheese, softened.
2. Reduce vanilla to ½ teaspoon.
Royal Icing:
1. Replace vegetable shortening and butter with 4 pasteurized egg whites. Beat until frothy.
2. Decrease powered sugar to 4 cups sifted powdered sugar. Omit heavy cream.
3. On high speed slowly add powdered sugar, vanilla and salt; beat until icing is thick and soft peaks form.
